Vol. 174 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Level of Strontium 90.

11.

asked the Minister for Health if he is in a position to advise the public as to where the truth lies between the statement by the British Prime Minister that the present increased level of strontium 90 due to radio-active fall out is not dangerous and the contrary statement by the head of the chemistry division of the California Institute of Technology and Nobel Prize winning chemist, Dr. Linus Pauling that the only safe level of strontium 90 in children's bones is zero.

Although I have carefully examined a copy of his recent statement, I cannot find that the British Prime Minister stated that the present increased level of Strontium 90 is not dangerous. The nearest approach to such a statement is the intimation that the levels are still well below those likely to give rise to concentrations in human bone which would require immediate consideration. In so far as this statement is at variance with that attributed to Dr. Linus Pauling, it is not my intention to attempt to explain the discrepancy nor do I consider that I have at present sufficient authoritative information at my disposal to enable me to do so.
