Vol. 174 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio-Activity Pollution.

10.

asked the Minister for Health whether he will state the names of the persons to whom he has delegated the responsibility of assessing the degree of radio-activity pollution in air and water in the State; and whether their report, or reports, will be made available to the public.

While I must disclaim having any direct or specific responsibility for the assessment of the degree of radio-activity pollution of air and water, I would remind the Deputy that in my reply to a question addressed by him to me on 8th April, I stated that, although the matter was not felt to be one of immediate urgency, consideration was nevertheless being given to the possibility of introducing in this country a limited system of measurement of air and water radio-activity. As this consideration, which will involve discussions with various Government and scientific agencies and much detailed examination of the numerous aspects of this very complex problem, has not yet been concluded, I regret that I am not at present in a position to furnish the information asked for by the Deputy.
