Vol. 174 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nationalist Government of Algeria.

19.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Government intend to recognise the nationalist government of Algeria.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Executive set up by the FLN does not exercise effective control in Algeria nor was it established on the basis of free elections. Its recognition would, I believe, hinder rather than help the application of the principle of self-determination to the people of Algeria.
