Vol. 174 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Customs Examinations at Ports.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider lessening the stringency of customs examinations at ports of entry during the tourist season.

I am satisfied that the customs examination of incoming passengers has already been relaxed to the maximum degree consistent with the maintenance of reasonable control and that the importance of facilitating the entry of tourists at all times is fully appreciated by customs personnel.

Does the Minister not agree that the customs examination at the ports of entry into this country is far more stringent than in other countries, particularly in the tourist season? Does he not further agree that the delay at customs examination is frustating to tourists coming here and is not to the benefit of our economy?

I do not at all agree that the examination coming in here is far more stringent than in other countries. I am also assured that there is no serious delay whatever.

Does the Minister not appreciate that in other countries on certain days of the week, tourists are allowed through the customs without examination, but that every single person coming in through any port of entry here has to endure a customs examination? If that is good for the tourist trade, the Minister had better think again.

I take it from the Minister's reply that he will guarantee better facilities tomorrow than on the last occasion to the tourists arriving at Galway Harbour from the United States?

They will be so glad to arrive in that city that they will not worry.
