Vol. 174 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Survey of West Cork Rivers.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is proposed to carry out any survey of the Ilen, Ouvane and Bandon rivers under the Arterial Drainage Act; and, if so, if he will state the approximate date on which such work is likely to commence.

All the rivers mentioned will be surveyed in due course with a view to consideration of schemes under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. A survey of the Owenkeagh catchment is already in hands, and in conjunction with that survey, it is proposed to investigate the Ilen and Ouvane rivers.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary define the term "due course".

The Owenkeagh survey is at present in progress and when it has been completed, the survey of the other two rivers will be undertaken.

Leaving aside the term "due course", can the Parliamentary Secretary say what the date is likely to be? Is it likely to be 1960, or 1961, or 1971, or when?

I am not going to commit myself to times and dates on this matter of arterial drainage because it would be impossible, due to the nature of the work.

The Parliamentary Secretary will appreciate that no money under this Act has been spent in West Cork since the scheme was inaugurated 14 years ago?

I know that, but there are other areas where work has been done.

I can speak for my constituency in Waterford. There is £10,000,000 going into the west and there is nothing for Waterford.
