Vol. 174 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Improvement.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will direct local authorities to utilise signposts to indicate approaches to curves on main roads rather than to spend large sums of money on removing such curves; and whether he will consider the desirability of deflecting such expenditure to improvements on secondary roads so as to give ratepayers better value for their money.

As I indicated in reply to a previous Question by the Deputy, I do not favour heavy expenditure on schemes involving road realignment in present circumstances unless definitely established traffic hazards warrant them or the road is, on account of its general condition, in need of reconstruction. It is primarily for the road authority to decide in a particular case whether to proceed with a realignment.

It is for the road authority also to decide, in conjunction with the Garda Síochána, where warning signs should be provided.
