Vol. 175 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Moorpark (Cork) Estate Buildings.

11.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if in order to alleviate the exceptionally high number now unemployed in the Fermoy area, the Agricultural Institute will speed up the construction of any buildings it is decided to build in the Moorpark Estate, Kilworth.

The provision of buildings required by An Foras Talúntais is a matter for the Council of that Body as established under the provisions of the Agriculture (An Foras Talúntais) Act, 1958. It is not one in which I have any function, or authority to intervene.

Would the Minister be good enough to have a chat with the director of the Agricultural Institute and ask him to establish what we all believe is necessary in the area, namely research, educational and scientific buildings, and also ask him to do it now when the unemployment position is so acute?

The position is that either I have the responsibility or I have not. I have not the responsibility but I am quite satisfied that the director and the council are keen to get on with their work. I am quite sure that it will be their aim to undertake the erection of these buildings as soon as they can. I do not feel inclined to interfere one way or another with that task, which is entirely theirs.

I agree but could the Minister not have a quite word with these people?

Suppose the Deputy himself had a quite word with these people, would that not be a good idea?

Well, between us, perhaps, we could do something.
