Vol. 176 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Channel Freight Rates.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what action he proposes to take arising out of the report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into Cross-Channel Freight Rates.

The Report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into cross-Channel Freight Rates was published on 13th June, 1959. The Report contains no formal recommendations but suggestions are made as to certain measures that might be taken which would serve to counterbalance the operation of any collective arrangements affecting cross-Channel freight rates which might not be in the public interest. These suggestions are being actively considered but it is too early to say what action it may be possible to take. The Deputy will be aware that it is intended to promote legislation for the establishment of a Department of Transport and Power to which these matters will be appropriate.

Could the Minister state if the new Department will have this report before it?

It is already under consideration. It would be appropriate to the new Department when it is set up, which, it is hoped, will be very soon.

Will they deal with it?

They will certainly.
