Vol. 176 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Ferry Service.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a ferry service operated at one time on the lower Shannon between Kerry and Clare; and whether in view of the advantages to tourists travelling from Ballybunion and Tarbert to Clare and Galway, he will investigate the possibility of reinstituting this service.

There is no information available in my Department about the operation of a ferry service across the Shannon estuary in the past.

In response to previous representations, C.I.E. examined the question of providing such a ferry service and rejected it because of the heavy outlay involved and the probability of its operation being uneconomic.

The provision of such a ferry service including the necessary landing facilities, appears to be more appropriate for consideration by the two local authorities concerned, and other local interests.
