Vol. 176 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rise in Price of Leather.

3.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reason for the recent substantial rise in the price of leather to shoe makers and boot repairers.

I understand that the increased price of leather is attributable to an increased demand for hides in world markets and a consequential increase in the price of hides.

Would the Minister not take steps to endeavour to control the price of leather in view of the fact that people who buy leather for the purpose of repairing boots and shoes are usually men in a small way of business and that the people who usually send their boots and shoes for repair to them are poor people? This is another addition to the cost of living. I think the Minister should take steps to control the price.

That is not a question. It is a statement.
