Vol. 176 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Attire of Drivers of State Cars.

9.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware of adverse public comment on the fact that, on the occasion of the Presidential Inauguration, the cars carrying Ministers of the Government in procession through the city were driven by men in civilian clothes; and whether in view of the fact that a sports jacket and flannel trousers are not suitable attire for such drivers, instructions will be issued that in future all drivers of State-owned cars will wear uniform when on duty.

I am not aware that there was any adverse comment on the fact that, on the occasion in question, the cars carrying members of the Government were driven by Gardaí in civilian clothes. It has never been the practice to have Ministers' cars driven by Gardaí in uniform nor do the members of the Government desire to have uniformed drivers.
