Vol. 177 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Relief Schemes.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the Special Works Department of the Dublin Corporation has not recruited from the employment exchanges for relief work since last June; and what action he proposes to take to ensure that suitable relief schemes are provided by the Corporation for the unemployed in the City of Dublin.

41.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total number of workers recruited from the employment exchanges for relief schemes under the Dublin Corporation special works schemes in the period June to September in each of the years 1957, 1958 and 1959; and whether special works prepared by the Special Works Department of the Dublin Corporation are being carried out by private contractors.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 40 and 41 together. The number of workers recruited from the Employment Exchanges for schemes carried out by the Special Works Department of the Dublin Corporation in the four months period June to September for the years 1957, 1958 and 1959 were 144, 115 and 80 respectively. It is not correct to suggest that no workers have been recruited since June, 1959. In fact, I have been informed that 116 men have been recruited since the end of June. The average total number of men at work weekly in Dublin on employment schemes during the four months period June to September was 152 in 1957, 108 in 1958 and 162 in 1959, of whom the men formerly in receipt of unemployment assistance were respectively 101 in 1957, 69 in 1958 and 102 in 1959.

No employment schemes have in recent years been carried out by contractors for the Dublin Corporation. If any future employment scheme should be done by contract, the contractor would be required to comply with the usual conditions of employing unemployment assistance labour through the Employment Exchanges.

As regards further employment schemes to be provided by the Dublin Corporation, I have authorised an allocation of £120,000 State grant, subject to a local contribution of £30,000.
