Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University College, Dublin: Accommodation Requirements.

60.

asked the Minister for Education if the Government has yet reached a decision on the report of the committee set up to consider the accommodation requirements of University College, Dublin; and, if so, if he will state the nature of the decision.

The report of the Commission appointed on 27th September, 1957, to inquire into the accommodation needs of the constituent colleges of the National University of Ireland was presented to each House of the Oireachtas on 2nd June, 1959.

As indicated in the official statement issued through the Government Information Bureau on that date the Government have specially considered the Commission's recommendations in regard to the erection of new buildings urgently needed for University College, Dublin, and have agreed in principle, subject to the approval of Dáil Éireann, that the College should be transferred gradually to a site in the College grounds on the Stillorgan Road.

I expect to be in a position to bring this matter before the House in a formal manner at an early date.

Was any consideration given to the need for university education in an area like Limerick, before arriving at that decision?

That seems to be a separate question.

It seems to be very relevant.

Would the Minister consider extending the faculties in Galway University, and thereby help to decentralise some of the institutions in Dublin?

That is a separate question.

It is an important one. Would the Minister bear it in mind when bringing this matter before the House?

I shall bear it in mind, but I think it is a matter for the university.
