Vol. 177 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Blacksod (Mayo) Slip.

29.

asked the Minister for the Gaeltacht if he will state whether or not it is intended to proceed with the building of the slip at Blacksod, which was sanctioned in February 1957.

Os rud é gur dhiúltaigh iascairí an cheantair le déanaí glacadh leis an bhfánán a bhí beartaithe a thógáil ag an bhFód Dubh, níl i gceist ag mo Roinnse dul ar aghaidh leis faoi láthair; ach má thagann athrú meoin ar mhuintir an cheantair ina thaobh beidh an Roinn toilteanach an scéal a bhreithniú arís.

I put this Question down to the Minister for Lands and I want to know why it was transferred to the Minister for the Gaeltacht. As I followed the Minister, and arising out of his reply, the fishermen of the area did not turn down the slip simpliciter and I want to know whether he will agree or not that it was turned down on the night in question, when he attended, because of a mistaken belief on their part that the slip was being presented to them as an alternative to the extensions to the pier, for which they looked?

May I ask the Minister if it is not a fact that, in accordance with the records available in his Department, I, at the request of the Minister for Agriculture, visited this area in 1955 and gave an undertaking that the slip would be provided for the Blacksod fishermen and that it was fixed in 1957?

Nílim cinnte cén teanga ba chóir dom a úsáid ach feictear dom go mba cheart dom Gaeilge a labhairt agus mé ag tabhairt freagra ar an Teachta Mac Loingsigh.

We have switched the language.

Bhí mé féin i nDáil-Cheanntair Phortláirge agus níor ghá dom Béarla a labhairt.

Bhí an Teachta Mac Loingsigh agus mé féin i láthair ag cruinniú poiblí tamall ó shoin agus bhí na hiascairí i láthair. Do cheistíos iad fá dhó an raibh siad sásta leis an bhfanán agus fuair mé an freagra go déarfa nach raibh siad á iarraidh.

It is precisely because I was listening that I put the question and because the proposition was put, either mistakenly or dishonestly, to the fishermen on that night that there was no such thing as an alternative between a slip and a pier. The Minister tried to put it into their mouths to refuse the slip or otherwise they might not get either.

Níor dhearna mé rogha den cheist.

The Minister asked them to have patience and carry on.

Most of us do not know what this is all about.
