Vol. 178 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment and Disablement Benefit.

15.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the estimated cost of providing (a) unemployment benefit and (b) disablement benefit on the basis of (i) 50/- per week for single persons, (ii) an addition of 30/- per week for wife or adult dependant, where appropriate, (iii) 15/- per week for first and only child, and (iv) 7/- per week for the second child; and if he will estimate the weekly contribution required to provide such benefits on the basis that the Exchequer contribution would be 20 per cent., and that the employers' and workers' contribution would be 40 per cent. each.

The estimated annual cost of providing benefits at the rates mentioned by the Deputy is as follows:—

(a) Unemployment Benefit— £5,350,000.

(b) Disability Benefit— £6,850,000.

The total cost would be £12,200,000 as compared with £7,106,000 in the current year. The estimated weekly contribution to provide such benefits would be 9/6d., and, on the basis of apportionment suggested by the Deputy, this would mean 3/9½d. from the employer, 3/9½d. from the insured person and a subsidy of £2,440,000 from the Exchequer.
