Vol. 178 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labour Court: Amending Legislation.

19.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that in recent years many trade disputes cannot be investigated by the Labour Court for over six months after they have been reported to the Court for investigation on account of the demand for the Court's services; that the second division of the Court is unable to function if the chairman, deputy chairman or an ordinary member is indisposed, which results in a reduction of the Court's services of 50 per cent; and if he will introduce amending legislation immediately to enable an additional deputy chairman and extraordinary members to be appointed to the Labour Court either in a whole-time or part-time capacity.

I am not aware that there is any undue delay in the investigation of disputes which are referred to the Labour Court and I am advised that the fact that the second division of the Court is unable to function when a member is indisposed has not held up the work of the Court.

I do not consider, therefore, that the Industrial Relations Acts require to be amended in the manner suggested by the Deputy.
