Vol. 178 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Burtonport Harbour.

37.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the results of his consultations with Donegal County Council for the repair and surfacing of Burtonport pier.

I understand that Donegal County Council have repaired recent damage to the front of Burtonport pier, but that they have not yet undertaken the re-surfacing of the pier.

Is the Minister aware that his predecessor, the present Minister for Transport and Power, received an undertaking from Donegal County Council that this pier would be resurfaced before the present herring season and not left in its present water-logged condition, and would he inquire why the undertaking given has not been implemented?

The Deputy is nearer to Donegal County Council than I am and I suggest that he should make inquiries.

I am not a member of it.

asked the Minister for Lands whether there is any hope of having navigation lights erected in Burtonport Harbour and the approaches thereto before or during the coming winter herring fishing season.

A State grant towards the cost of installing navigation lights has been offered to Donegal County Council and their reply is awaited.

Could the Minister say when the grant was offered to Donegal County Council?

In October, I think, and I understand that they have deferred it for consideration.

The fishermen are to be left in the dark for the coming winter?

All I can say is that as far as my Department is concerned, this grant has been offered.

Could the Minister state the amount?
