Vol. 178 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Teachers' Records and Returns.

27.

asked the Minister for Education whether the following records and returns must be completed by national teachers in all national schools:—(i) daily, quarterly and yearly roll books for each pupil, (ii) daily attendance book, (iii) daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly attendance on rolls to cover the average ages and precentage, (iv) male register, (v) female register, (vi) quarterly returns, and (vii) other returns; and if he will give the reasons for such detailed records.

The principal teacher of every National School is required to keep the following records regarding the pupils of the school: a Register, which contains a permanent record of the school history of every pupil, a Roll Book, in which the attendance or absence of each pupil is recorded daily, and a Daily Report Book, in which the total enrolment and attendance in each standard are recorded daily.

From these records the principal teacher is required to furnish to my Department:—

(a) the average attendance for each month, quarter and year,

(b) the average number on rolls for each quarter and year, and

(c) the numbers on rolls on 30th June each year, arranged according to age, sex and standard.

The staffing of National Schools and the rates of payment of certain grants to the schools and teachers are based on the average attendance and enrolment and the returns which are furnished are required in connection therewith.
