Vol. 178 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Assembly of Japanese-manufactured Radio Components.

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the proposal to assemble Japanese-manufactured radio components at Shannon Airport, having regard particularly to its possible adverse effect on Anglo-Irish trade relations and resulting detriment to the market for Irish produce in Great Britain.

The proposal is to manufacture radio sets at Shannon Airport from components, some of which will be made in the Shannon factory and some, as is common in the radio industry, by manufacturers specialising in the production of components. Components will be bought from manufacturers in Ireland and Great Britain and some parts, mainly transistors, from Japan. When in full production Japanese components will account for only one-fourth of the exfactory cost of a set.

I see no reason why the establishment of this manufacturing industry at Shannon Airport should have an adverse effect on Anglo-Irish trade relations.
