Vol. 179 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dismantling of Kerry Branch Lines.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that, following the intense opposition to the closing down of the two Córas Iompair Éireann branch lines in South Kerry, there is grave objection to the lifting of the rails and the complete dismantling of those lines until the people intimately concerned are satisfied that the alternative system of transport now available for passengers, goods and livestock has been tested and proven satisfactory in regard to fares, freight charges, road safety and the provisions in case of an emergency; and, if so, if he will ascertain whether in the circumstances Córas Iompair Éireann will postpone the dismantling.

I do not propose to intervene with Córas Iompair Éireann in a matter which is one for the discretion of the Board.

Would the Minister state if these rails have already been disposed of to some firm?

I am unable to state that.

Has the Minister any function in the matter?

I have already explained in detail to the House my function in the matter.

The explanation is not very clear.
