Vol. 179 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Franchise for Gardaí.

59.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is proposed to introduce legislation to extend the franchise in Dáil elections to members of the Garda Síochána; and, if so, when.

As indicated in reply to a Dáil Question on 5th November last, it is intended to include in forthcoming legislation to amend the electoral law a provision repealing the statutory prohibition which precludes members of the Garda Síochána from voting at Dáil elections.

It is not possible to say when the legislation will be introduced.

Can the Minister give a guarantee to the House that the Gardaí will be in a position to cast their votes in the next general election?

No, I am not in any position to give that guarantee, but I am sure the Gardaí appreciate that they are going to get votes.

It is just a matter of "Live horse and you will get grass."

This horse does not have to live so long as it had to under the previous Government.
