Vol. 180 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Bray Amenities.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance what schemes are at present under consideration by him for the improvement of the amenities at Bray, County Wicklow; what the proposed cost is of each such scheme; when he will be in a position to make known his decision in regard to such schemes; and whether any improvements in the amenities are likely to be initiated for completion for the coming tourist season.

The following suggestions for the improvement of amenities at Bray have been submitted by Bray Urban District Council in response to the invitation of the Minister for local Government last July for suggestions relating to State investment in important public projects of economic merit:—

(1) The development of the northern end of Bray esplanade as a municipal entertainment centre;

(2) Development of approach roads to the harbour and northern esplanade;

(3) Construction of protective works to prevent flooding by the Dargle river;

(4) Conservation of the harbour for use by pleasure craft and extension of the present sewer outfall to a point outside the harbour;

(5) Acquisition of 40 acres of land on Bray Head for tourist development.

Estimates of cost furnished by Bray Urban District Council for the above schemes are

(1) £75,000

(2) £31,950

(3) (4) £80,000

(5) £10,000

Items (1) and (5) above are under consideration in connection with the scheme of grants for the development of major tourist resorts. The other proposals are being examined by the Economic Development Branch of my Department in conjunction with similar proposals received from other local authorities. When decisions have been taken on their proposals, the council will be notified.

It is expected that a reply will shortly issue to Bray Urban District Council but it is not possible to say whether any improvements in the amenities in question are likely to be initiated in time for completion before the coming tourist season.
