Vol. 180 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Companies: Grants, Loans and Repayments to Exchequer.

11.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state in respect of Aer Rianta, Aer Linte and Aer Lingus the total amount of (a) grants (b) loans and (c) capital supplied or guaranteed by the Government to each of them, and the repayments made to the Exchequer by each in respect of such grants, loans or capital.

(a) I would refer the Deputy to the Appropriation Accounts which show that up to the end of the financial year 1952/53, which is the last year in which any subsidy or grant was paid, the total amount paid to Aer Rianta in respect of the management of Dublin Airport was £82,870 and in respect of the air services was £1,225,912. The Appropriation Accounts do not divide the latter amount among each of the companies.

(b) No loan has been made to any of the companies.

(c) The Minister for Finance has invested £3,698,540 in Aer Rianta. No direct investment has been made in either Aer Lingus or Aer Linte as Aer Rianta is the holding company for these companies. The Minister for Finance has guaranteed £3,500,000 under the Air Navigation and Transport Acts, 1936 to 1959.

No repayments have been made to the Exchequer by any of the companies other than a repayment of subsidy by Aer Rianta amounting to £22,222.
