Vol. 180 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Servants, Established and Unestablished.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of (a) established and (b) unestablished civil servants for each year from 1957 to date.

I have had the available figures set out in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be included in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

*The figures suppled are taken from the Civil Service Census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year; they are not yet available in respect of 1st January, 1960.

†The figures do not include industrial employees, persons casually employed or civilians employed under the Defence Act, 1954.

In 1959 the basis of the Census was altered to exclude certain classes which were previously included. These classes comprise Scale-payment Sub-Postmasters, Branch Managers of Employment Exchanges, Collectors of Taxes and certain part-time employees. The estimated figure in respect of these classes is 2,700 at most.
