Vol. 180 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New South Dublin Road.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any proposal has been submitted to him for the construction of a new road on the abandoned Harcourt Street railway line between Shankill and Milltown; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government by whom the foreign expert at present examining the possible route of the main road at Shankill village, County Dublin, was engaged; and when a decision on the proposed roadway is likely.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 34 and 37 together.

At the request of the Dublin Corporation a traffic consultant recently undertook a preliminary survey of the traffic problems of Dublin City and its environs and submitted a preliminary report to the Corporation. I am not aware that he is examining the possible route of the main road at Shankill. The Dublin Corporation made a preliminary investigation of the proposal to build a new road on the abandoned railway line, but no proposals in regard to it have been submitted to my Department. A traffic survey which Dublin Corporation are considering following the receipt of the consultant's preliminary report would throw light on the merits of this proposal. If such a road were constructed it would have to join the existing main road at Shankill and this would affect any development proposals in the area.
