Vol. 181 No. 2

Written Answers. - State Forests.

23.

asked the Minister for Lands the approximate area covered by the different species and ages of trees at the latest convenient date in the State forests (excluding nurseries).

It would not be possible to give information in the form sought by the Deputy on a segregation species by species and in age groups as a high proportion of State plantations is laid down as intimate mixtures of two or more species and as age categories tend to get mixed in the course of time through the replacement of failures, restocking of windblow, etc.

The Census of Woodlands which is currently in progress will yield information as to the current stocking of plantations and will describe stands in relation to area, whether mixed or pure, principal species etc. It is proposed to publish a digest of information when the Census has been completed.
