Vol. 181 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Refunds.

7.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance the number of cases awaiting attention in the Income Tax Refund Office; and in view of the fact that some refunds in respect of the year 1956-57 have not yet been made if he will take steps to expedite the handling of claims.

At the end of last week the number of Income Tax repayment claims not yet taken up for examination was approximately 1,000. The number of course varies from day to day. It will be appreciated that the influx and turnover of claims is particularly heavy at this time as the Income Tax year has just ended and the full income of the year is now ascertainable so that abnormally large numbers of claims are being lodged. The claims are dealt with as speedily as possible and virtually all claims received up to 13th April have been taken up by the examining staff. If the Deputy will let me know of any particular case that he may have in mind I shall be glad to have enquiry made into it.
