Vol. 181 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Opening of Cork Airport.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the date on which it is expected to open Cork airport.

As I indicated in reply to a previous question on 6th April last, the construction and equipping of the Cork Airport is a major undertaking and the opening date will be determined largely by the completion of certain essential construction works. The date specified for the completion of the whole contract is 31st July, 1961.

It will not be possible for some time yet to say whether this date can be improved upon or to give a firm date for the opening of the Airport. I would like to assure the Deputy that I am as concerned as he is that there will be no avoidable delays. At the same time he will appreciate that I have a responsibility to ensure that the facilities provided at State expense will be safe and adequate for the purpose and a sound investment.
