Vol. 181 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Authority: Limerick Representative.

36.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why no representative from Limerick was appointed to the new Television Authority.

The Deputy's question presupposes an obligation—which does not exist—to select the members of the Broadcasting Authority on a geographical basis. The members will not, of course, represent particular areas but will collectively concern themselves with the interests of the whole country, including those of Limerick.

While appreciating what the Minister says might I ask if he has considered appointing anybody from Limerick at this stage?

Deputy O'Malley was not available.

The selection of members for the broadcasting authority was not a matter for me; it was a matter for the Government, as the Deputy is aware, and a large number of people were considered.
