Vol. 182 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Postmasters and Postmistresses.

21.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is prepared to alter the present basis of salary payments to local postmasters and postmistresses where their salary rates are reduced because a reduced number of old age pensions and other social welfare payments is being paid and there is a reduction of income from postage stamps, etc.

The salaries of sub-postmasters are related to the volume of business transacted at their offices. Every sub-postmaster's salary is revised every three years when it is either raised, reduced or left unaltered depending on how the volume of business compares with that at the previous revision. Any question of changing this arrangement would be a matter for consideration by the Sub-postmaster's Consultative Council in the first instance and a claim on this subject is under consideration by the Council at present.

Question No. 22 postponed.
