Vol. 182 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aide-de-Camp to Taoiseach.

1.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach the name of his aide-de-camp, the duties which he has to perform in that capacity, the date of his appointment, and all allowances, including uniform allowances and travelling and subsistence allowances, paid to such person in the past year in addition to his pay as an army officer.

Captain John O'Brien, who is attached to the 2nd Motor Squadron, Cavalry Corps, and holds a permanent commission in the Defence Forces, acts when so required as my Aide-de-camp in addition to fulfilling army duties appropriate to his rank.

The duties of Aide-de-camp to the Taoiseach are to attend on him, when required, at certain formal functions and to represent him on occasions, such as funeral ceremonies, when it is not practicable for the Taoiseach to be present personally.

Captain O'Brien was appointed Aide-de-camp with effect from 25th June, 1959. From that date to 31st May last he has received £142 0s. 9d. in respect of his allowance as Aide-de-camp and £27 6s. 6d. in respect of travelling, subsistence, etc., allowances. No uniform allowance is payable.

Mr. Ryan

Can the Taoiseach say whether or not he has any other jobs lined up for his relatives?

The Deputy would not be a boy scout anyway.

(Interruptions.)
