Vol. 183 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Feale River Drainage Operation: Passage of Salmon.

2.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has now all the information which he requires on the condition of the Feale River for the passage of salmon, arising from the recent drainage operation carried out on that river; and if he is in a possession of an urgent resolution dealing with this matter from the Limerick Board of Fishery Conservators; and what action he proposes to take to have remedial measures given effect to.

Considerable information has been gathered in the course of inspections over a long period for the purpose of ensuring that adequate facilities would be provided for the passage of salmon on completion of drainage work on the River Feale. Remedial measures designed to give optimum facilities in low-water conditions are being carried out experimentally and these may be modified in the light of experience.

I am aware of the terms of recent resolutions adopted by the Limerick Board of Conservators which relate in the main to the post-drainage conditions as affecting fishing by draft nets in the estuary. This aspect of the problem is also being studied.

On Wednesday, 18th May, I had a question to the Minister for Finance about a scheme for Cahirciveen freshwater lake and I got permission to raise the matter that night on the Adjournment. However, something happened, as you will remember, that prevented my doing so. I hope that I shall get permission to raise it this afternoon, if the Minister for Finance is available. If he cannot be present, I shall be quite willing to have it postponed to another day.
