Vol. 183 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Aliens.

5.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of the 2,949 aliens in this country who are employed and the nature of their employment; if they have individual permits for employment; and if there is any limit to their period of residence here.

There are 1,184 current permits for the employment of aliens, each one of which is in respect of an individual alien. The particulars of the nature of the employments covered by these permits are in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report. Employment permits are issued for a maximum period of 12 months and are subject to renewal. The question of a time limit on the period of residence is one for the Minister for Justice but I understand that the practice is to equate the period of residence with the period covered by the employment permit.
