Vol. 183 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballylahan (Mayo) Bridge.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government what are the reasons for the cessation of work on the new bridge at Ballylahan, Foxford County Mayo; if by reason of the said delay any compensation will be payable to the contractor; and if the clerk of works or any other employee is being paid or will be paid during the said cessation of work.

The design for this bridge was based on conditions that would operate following the completion of drainage works on the river Moy in the vicinity. While the bridge was in course of construction a heavy flood occurred, which caused concern as to whether the bridge would take abnormal floods pending the execution of the Moy drainage works. Work has stopped while consideration was given to the question of raising the bridge slightly. Full examination of the problem however established that it would be safe to proceed with the bridge as originally designed, and work was resumed last May.

I understand that the contractor has informed the local authority that he will claim compensation for the delay. This is a matter to be settled between him and the local authority.

I understand also that the Clerk of Works was assigned other duties during the period work was interrupted.
