Vol. 184 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballinahown (Westmeath) Water Supply.

67.

asked the Minister for Local Government what the position is in regard to the water supply scheme for Ballinhown, County Westmeath; if he is aware that no water is available for over eighty children attending the local school; and when it is proposed to commence work on the scheme.

I have received no proposals from the Westmeath County Council for the provision of a water supply for Ballinahown.

Does the Minister agree that where there are over 80 children attending a national school which has no water supply available, it is a matter to which he should direct the attention of the local authority, having regard to the fact that for a long number of years past there has been agitation amongst the local people for a proper water supply?

I agree absolutely with the view expressed by the Deputy that there is a very real need in that respect, but, as the Deputy is fully aware, the initiation of these schemes rests with the local authority. However, in view of the emphasis that has been laid on the need in this case, I have no doubt they will propose a scheme.
