Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect Of each of the last four years the number of persons in Dublin City who have held blue cards entitling them to free medical service.

In my reply to a question of 24th March, 1960, from the Deputy I outlined the system of reviewing medical cards which is in operation in Dublin and I explained that certain information was not readily available from the Health Authority's records. The number of holders of medical cards on any particular day can be ascertained from these records but it is not possible, without considerable detailed examination of records, to ascertain the number of persons who have held medical cards for some period during the course of a year.

Of the figures available, that which corresponds most closely to the information requested by the Deputy is the largest number of persons holding medical cards on any day in the year. For the last four years the relevant figures are

1960

(to date)

33,438

1959

35,541

1958

44,086

1957

45,886

The number of persons who held medical cards for some period during the year would in all cases be somewhat higher than the figure I quoted.
