Vol. 184 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - General and Nuclear Disarmament.

25.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, since Ireland is not represented on the Security Council of the United Nations, and since the Irish delegation has shown a particular interest in disarmament in general and nuclear disarmament in particular, he will instruct the delegation to move that the whole question of general and nuclear disarmament be debated as soon as possible at the General Assembly where both this country and the newer one-time colonial and uncommitted nations may have a more positive influence on these most important subjects.

All items relating to disarmament which are on the agenda of the current session of the General Assembly of the United Nations have been referred to the First (Political) Committee for detailed discussion. These include a Soviet proposal on general and complete disarmament, as well as the Irish item on the prevention of the wider dissemination of nuclear weapons.

The First Committee comprises all members of the United Nations and therefore the countries mentioned by the Deputy may participate fully and freely in the discussions on disarmament in that Committee.
