Vol. 184 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Jobs.

3.

asked the Taoiseach what is the average number of new jobs created in the years 1957, 1958 and 1959 until the most recent date for which figures are available.

Comprehensive information is not available concerning the total number of new jobs created in any period. With regard, however, to new industrial undertakings and extensions of existing undertakings, having a capital investment of not less than £10,000, which came to the notice of the Minister for Industry and Commerce as having commenced production in the period 1st January, 1957, to 30th September, 1960, the estimated amount of initial employment is 6,600 workers and the estimated potential is 9,600 workers.

The quarterly estimates of persons engaged in industries producing transportable goods indicate that by June, 1960, there was a net increase of 8,800 in employment over the June, 1957, level, 8,700 of the increase being in manufacturing industries.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not in a position to give, for the three years mentioned, the number of new jobs created?

That is the question that has been replied to.

That is no reply to the question. The Taoiseach has already stated that it was his intention to create 100,000 new jobs; how can he decide that the 100,000 new jobs have been created if he is not able to give the figures for the three years for which they have been asked?
