Vol. 184 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Service for Gardaí.

10.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of members of the Garda Síochána in possession of (1) a medal with bar who are thereby entitled to two years' extension of service and (2) a medal without bar; whether he is aware that very considerable distress is being caused to many members of the Garda in possession of a medal without bar who are now being retired; and if he will grant these members the two years' extension.

The total numbers of members of the Force claiming to be in possession of medals with bar are 208 and without bar 464.

The question of amending the Garda Síochána Retirement Regulations so as to enable members who hold medals without bar to serve to 65 years has been considered but it has been decided that such a concession could not be granted.
