Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Houses: State Subsidy

20.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to continue payments of the State subsidy in respect of any Dublin Corporation tenanted houses which may be sold to tenants under a tenant purchase scheme.

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. Ryan

Is it not a fact that this subsidy is paid in relation to local authority tenanted houses in rural areas? Would the Minister say why there is the discrepancy between the treatment given to rural dwellers and that given to urban dwellers?

I may say in reply to that Supplementary Question that a major factor, if not, the major factor, in deciding the policy to which he referred with regard to houses in rural Ireland was the desire to give special security to persons working on the land.

Is the Minister aware that it is impossible for Dublin Corporation to put forward a purchase scheme in view of the fact that they would lose the subsidy, which would mean that a rent of over £2 would have to be charged? That prohibits any thought of such a thing as a purchase scheme.

I understand that, far from it having emerged as yet that it is impossible for them to do it, last year they did intend to bring forward a scheme for full examination, that the matter has now been raised again and that a scheme is expected to be put before the Housing Committee of the Corporation.

The Housing Manager has pointed out that such a scheme is not possible if they lose the subsidy.
