Vol. 184 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing in Tullamore.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether applications will be considered from room dwellers and newly-weds for houses in Tullamore, Offaly; if he is aware that some persons have been awaiting houses for six years and living in rooms meanwhile; and if arrangements will be be made to have some of the local authority houses in the town made available for such persons.

The allocation of tenancies of houses falling vacant in their housing estate is a function of the housing authority concerned, subject to the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations. I have recently informed housing authorities by circular letter that where the needs of persons in the priority categories, namely those living in unfit and overcrowded conditions, have been or are effectively being met, they may submit proposals for the provision of houses for other persons who are eligible for and in need of local authority housing and not in a position to provide their own accommodation with the aid of housing grants and loans.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether Tullamore Urban District Council appoint tenants to their houses as they become vacant, without advertising them in the ordinary way so that all interested persons may make application for them; if he considers that this practice is desirable; and if he will inquire into the matter.

I understand that Tullamore Urban District Council advertise vacancies as they arise, except where vacancies are filled, by transfer of tenancies.

It is not mandatory on housing authorities to advertise tenancies, but in the appointment of tenants regard must be had to the provisions of the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations, 1950 and 1953.
