Vol. 185 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Overseas Allowances for Congo Forces.

31.

asked the Minister for Defence the amount of the additional allowances granted to (a) officers, (b) N.C.O.s and (c) men as a result of their assignment for duty in the Congo, and the comparable additional allowances paid to (1) Swedish, (2) Canadian and (3) other troops assigned to duty there.

An overseas allowance of 7/6d. a day is payable to all ranks in respect of service with the United Nations Force in the Congo.

I am not in a position to give authoritative information about the allowances being paid by other Governments to their troops in the Congo. I may add that the adequacy of our overseas allowance is under active consideration at present.

If any decision is made to increase these allowances before the present contingent leave the Congo, I take it that any beneficial decision will apply retrospectively?
