Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charollais Cattle

9.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has seen a report of his meeting with the Livestock Consultative Committee, with special reference to the famous French heavyweight cattle "Charollais"; whether cattle of this breed are already in this country; whether their import is prohibited; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the report referred to. I have no reason to believe that these cattle are in the country. The import of all such cattle is prohibited.

I recently put before a meeting of the Livestock Consultative Council established under the Livestock Breeding Act, 1925, certain information as to the consequences for our export trade if we were to import these cattle. The Council was of opinion that, in the circumstances, no decision should be made to import these cattle, even for experimental purposes, at the present time.
