Vol. 185 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Water Hydrants.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number and cost of water hydrants which were delivered to Dublin Corporation by a non-Irish firm a few weeks ago, the average number of water hydrants imported each year, and the average cost of each hydrant.

I understand that a delivery of 50 valve water hydrants was made on the 30th November by an Irish firm who were appointed contractors by the Dublin Corporation for the supply of these articles for the current year. The contract price is £7 15s. per hydrant. I have no information as to the average number and cost of hydrants imported each year.

Is the Minister aware that an employee of the Dublin Corporation has invented a method whereby the worn-out hydrants can be reconditioned, that these reconditioned hydrants have been successfully used by private enterprise; that Dublin Corporation have refused to give them a fair trial and as a result of that there is an increased charge to the ratepayers?

That is a matter which might be pursued with some effect at the Dublin Corporation level. If successful at that stage, no doubt my Department will be hearing of the outcome.

Perhaps the Minister would be agreeable to mention it to the Dublin Corporation?

I could inquire but further than that I do not think I should go.
