Vol. 185 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Customs Duty Collected by Postmen.

43.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the total amount of customs duty collected by postmen in respect of parcels delivered by them in each of the months of November and December, 1959.

Customs duties collected by postmen in respect of parcels delivered by them amounted to £29,499 in November, 1959 and £37,086 in December, 1959.

In addition, Customs duties paid direct to the Department by recipients of parcels amounted to £6,575 in November, 1959 and £4,775 in December, 1959.

Could the Minister say if it would be correct to attribute the amount of £37,000 collected in the month of December last year almost entirely to duty on Christmas presents?

I would not think so.
