Vol. 185 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Reception in Cork District.

44.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether complaints have been received by his Department or by Radio Éireann from residents in the Ovens district, County Cork, regarding serious interference with radio reception; and, if so, what it is intended to do to improve reception in this area.

As the Deputy is aware all powers appropriate for the investigation and detection of interference with wireless telegraphy receiving apparatus have been conferred on Radio Éireann under the Broadcasting Authority (Control of Interference) Order, 1960. I would suggest that he communicate his enquiry to the Authority.

In view of the fact that such complaints were submitted by residents and that following a visit by inspectors, nothing was done, to whom can they apply now and ask that something be done?

I have asked the Deputy to communicate with the Authority. From the report I have here, I think that the Deputy could profitably communicate with the Authority.

If I make such inquiry and do not get satisfaction, is the Minister ready to bring the matter up?

It is entirely a matter for the Radio Éireann Authority.

The Minister has indicated he has certain information available to him on his files.

He stated that the Deputy could profitably communicate with the Authority. Am I to assume that, even though the Minister is in possession of information he has got from Radio Éireann, he is unwilling to communicate it to the House?

The Deputy has no right to make such an assumption. That is not what I said.
