Vol. 186 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant for Port, Inver (Donegal) Works.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make available a grant for the erection of a winch and for the widening of the pier at the progressive fishing village of Port, Inver, County Donegal.

The carrying out of the following improvements to the pier at Port, Inver, Co. Donegal, was considered by the Inter-Departmental Committee in January, 1956.

Seaward end of pier:

1. Deepening of approach channel and underpinning.

2. Raising the existing pier head.

Landward end of pier:

1. Widening of the existing pier.

2. Construction of a new slipway or extension of the old one arising from this widening.

3. Improvement to parapet wall.

Only the works at the seaward end of the pier were sanctioned. They were started in July, 1957, and certified complete in June, 1959, at an estimated cost of £2,700. I am arranging to have the proposal for the widening of the pier re-examined. At the same time the question of a winch will be considered.

While the Parliamentary Secretary might not be aware of the location of this very important harbour, would he give it priority in consideration?

We shall give it active consideration.

The Parliamentary Secretary said he would be prepared to put a winch at this pier.

I did not say I was prepared to put a winch at the pier. I said the matter would receive active consideration.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary exercise the same active consideration with regard to the winch I asked him to put on Tramore pier? Or is it the intention to shove it down with the railway?
