Vol. 186 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Manually-Controlled Traffic Junctions.

56.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice whether there is any junction in Dublin city at which during peak traffic hours every day traffic lights are switched off and manual control of the junction by the Garda Síochána substituted; and, if so, if he will state the junctions in question and the hours at which the junctions are manually controlled daily.

57.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the number of occasions in the past year at the Tara Street-Pearse Street junction on which traffic lights were switched off and manual control of the junction by the Garda Síochána substituted.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 56 and 57 together.

The traffic lights are switched off every day and manual control by the Garda Síochána substituted at the Tara Street-Pearse Street junction.

Since 30th November last this has been done from 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday inclusive and from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Saturdays. Before that, from 3rd June, 1960, when the practice was introduced, to 30th November, 1960, the hours of manual control were from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday and from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Saturdays. Outside those hours the junction was controlled manually on special occasions but records of those occasions are not kept.

Mr. Ryan

Am I to understand that it does not occur daily anywhere else in Dublin?

This is the only junction at which it is done daily as a matter of routine.
