Vol. 187 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of School Cleaners and Meals Assistants.

26.

asked the Minister for Education whether there is any fixed minimum wage which should be paid to (1) cleaners in schools and (2) persons who help with school meals.

The Managers of national schools are responsible for the arrangements in connection with the cleaning of the school premises. Cleaners who are engaged for this purpose are in every case employed and paid by the school Manager and the wages payable are a matter between the Manager and the person employed.

There is no fixed minimum wage prescribed for persons employed as cleaners in vocational schools. Their remuneration is decided by the vocational education committees, who are their employers, by reference to the wages applying to similar employment locally.

Secondary schools are private institutions and hence I have no function in relation to the wages or salaries of the non-teaching staff employed in them.

I have no function in relation to the employment of persons to help with the school meals.
