Vol. 187 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sites for Industrial Use.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether a local authority is empowered to purchase or otherwise acquire within its functional area a site suitable for industrial use in the hope of being able thereby to attract an industry to which such site could be sold or leased.

In conjunction with their powers to provide housing accommodation, urban local authorities, including Town Commissioners, are empowered by Section 8 of the Housing (Ireland) Act, 1919, as amended by Section 51 of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1931, to acquire land by agreement or compulsorily with a view to the sale or lease of sites for industrial purposes. Local authorities, both urban and rural, are empowered by Section 40 of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1931, as amended by Section 27 of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1950, to provide and maintain in connection with housing accommodation any buildings or land which in the opinion of the Minister will serve a beneficial purpose for the persons housed.
